 Overview

My topic is based on child development and the stages of child development, I know there a various stages children go through, from birth to adulthood, but I would really love to focus on childhood since it is a crucial point in our lives. Childhood prepares us for adulthood and for life, I wanted tofind out some of the critical elements associated with child development and I wanted to find resources that would prepare me if I were to do a research paper on this topic. My main reason for research topic is the fact that I have two small children under the age of six and kids really do say the craziest, funniest things. I would love to explore their thought process to see what I have in store and what is yet to come for me. Kids are fun, so where do the get their personalities from?

Website resources

·         Ages and Stages in Child Development

http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/TOPIC_Child_Development

This website stood out to me because every other search result was a .com domain, this website was an .edu domain making it an education website. When I looked into the website I see that it had sources cited, it was last updated on June 12, 2008, and the source comes from university of Florida. It was current and went into depth about my topic; it was extremely relevant to the topic I was researching. It reviewed all the stages of child development it also included footnotes for citation and interactive things parents could do during the different childhood to adolescent stages. I found this feature to be really cool, useful information I could apply.

·         Child development: stages of development

http://www1.dshs.wa.gov/ca/fosterparents/training/chidev/cd02.htm

this time when I was looking for a website I was looking for something a little kid friendly or something that would appeal to a parent or to an individual not researching child development but just curious about it. I stumbled upon this website which has a .gov domain, meaning it is used for informational purposes. The website doesn’t specify when last updated that was a downfall if I was looking for currency, but I was more focused on relevancy and this website hit it right on the nail. It turn out that this website is an ABC guide for child development for foster parents, this is perfect because it accommodated a different crown a crowd of possibly new parents that would like an in depth overview of child development.

Conclusion

This concludes my final project I have learned a great deal about child development that I wasn’t aware of before just by doing this project. It was great because I can know understand the though process of my children be able to interact and relate with them in ways they understand. I know will apply all my research capabilities for future projects, work purposes and for life.

Blog Reflection 5-Final Farewell

I absolutely LOVE online classes they are the best to me. If I could take online classes for the remainder of my schooling I undoubting would. This is not my first online class by far, but every online class I take I get an A, AND THAT IS FANTASTICAL! I learn better I can work at my own speed and I love to work on deadlines it challenges me, keeps me focused allows me to thrive. Since I work full time the last thing I want to do is sit in a class room for two hours listening to a lecture (very boring). With online classes there is allot less student interaction but that doesn’t affect me that much, as long as I can chat and pick the brains of people without judging by appearance and base it off of knowledge that is much more effective to me. The only thing I would’ve liked to see different that I liked in my psychology class was, students had an open forum that was not graded allowing them to interact with each other, get answers and ask question, share the same concerns with other student. That was a great tool that helped break the ice even though we are online we still felt comfortable asking questions and commenting on their comments.

In conclusion I think that library classes are appropriate for online courses especially since you use online resources to complete most of the project, I think it is  a wonderful idea, that way when you find an answer you were looking for you can yell, YAHOO! w/o anybody shushing you b/c your in a library J . Anytime during this course I would’ve gone to a face-to face open workshop with no problems.

Blog reflection 4

As I approach the last two weeks of Library competency class, I realize the wealth of information I have obtained. I now believe that I am information competent and I have learned and developed skills and tools I can utilize for the rest of my life. There will always be room for improvements, but in the future I can continue to be thorough in my search, make sure I use the most in depth, current and most credible information, to make for great research and information hunting.’

Information Competency is the ability to:
  • Recognize the need for information
  • Know where to obtain information
  • Choose the proper source and retrieve appropriate information
  • Organize, analyze, and synthesize information
  • Use and communicate information

These skills are very important for a student to have, keep and utilize, great resource tool, and will make school and work a lot easier. An information competent student should know how to do all of thee above anything less, the student is cheating themselves.

Blog Reflection 3

My opinion on the research process has changed tremendously; I have found vast arrays of resources that can be utilized. I always thought research was a boring and tedious part of school, and I couldn’t wait to be done. Now I notice that when I have a research project due, I actually have a good time with it. I know where to search the type of info I am looking for and the bibliographies are so easy now.

I am so happy I was able to be exposed to this class and immediately begin to utilize my new found skills. This is not just a course to pass for credit; it’s a foundation course that will help you through college and the rest of your life. This class should be mandatory for first time freshman’s so they can start off on the right foot. In addition utilize their new found research skills for the remainder of their schooling to ensure success.

I now know the power of research, the power of the internet and the power of reference books I also know now that Google is the reference guru it looks up everything and can even send text messages! How bizarre!

yahoo! Library rocks, seriously I have learned so much from this course and my skills were just put to the test tonight, I had to do a 5 page political thought paper with 10 works cited sources from the internet, books, journal ect, and do a refrence page at the end. whew! It was a lot of work but three hours and 6 spell check and proofreading sections later it was compkete. But that is no the reason for my blog, in the past i have always been a little shakey when it comes down to doing refrence and works cited pages but this time was easy breezy. I felt confident I knew what i was doing and I knew exactly how to look for resources that I needed how to comprise all my data to a perfectly typed essay paper. And this is all thanks to my library excersices over the past week. Thank you library 3, this course has helped me is helping me and I know wil tcontinue to help me in the future. Oh yes and google is my knew best friend. unitl next time...

Blog reflection 1

You know when I first signed up for Library 3 class it was because I had to, in order to fulfill my GE requirements to transfer to CSUDH. I was never an individual who was really interested in the library or its functions when I discovered the power of Internet; I never had much use for the library. But just after 3 weeks of this course I discovered how useful the Library was the vast variety of information and resources that it contains. I learned how to search reference books online, and in the library it even helps me in other  classes when I am looking for information that I need for a test or an assignment I can now get right to the source, Its great. It takes a lot of guesswork out of projects and research topics.

I know that this course will help me next year at the University for research and homework purposes. I am glad I took this course because when I went to orientation at CSUDH I actually found out that a library and research course is recommended for continued success in college and furthered education.

This class was definitely worth taking and I am glad I got an opportunity to be exposed to a course like this, school is not the only place you can utilize a place like this, I find that I will and can use this in my everyday life.

Adventures at the library

My Library Visit- 6/18/08

I visited a Long beach public Library today, the Ruth Bach branch and it was very interesting, libraries always seemed bigger to me when I was little but maybe it was because I was smaller (you know things are always bigger when your little) J

During my visit I took a small tour of the library going to the different sections on the library, visiting the online catalog and checking out the collections, of non fiction and romance books they had to offer. I cant say they had a humongous collection of anything but they did has a vast collection of fiction and non fiction books. In observance of what could be checked out to the public I discovered that, just about everything except some audio that had to be listened to there and the magazines were available for checkout.  O this would leave the average reader or library goers the opportunity to check out movies, old and new, fiction, non fiction, romance, teen and children books.

A Couple services that were available at the library were the use of internet, the computer that ONLY looks up books online also called the library catalog, and might  I add we didn’t have these when I was younger we had to look it up from a drawer of cards to see if the book was in the library talk about tedious, anyway not meaning to digress the last thing I note the library offer was a learning center on the same wall as the checkout counter, that room also contained computer for my one on one attention, for tutoring and so forth.

I had to ask for assistance on this but the library uses a dewy decimal system for classification, which is kind of weird because when looking up a book in the online library catalog, the call number was the type of book for example, fiction, non fiction ect. This system used ay be due to the fact that this is a public library or it may just be because this is as smaller library and directing people to the section may be easier then giving a series of numbers especially for the children.

I didn’t really see a reference section in this library perhaps it was something I overlooked but going down the isles (every last one) there was no reference section, they had everything from autobiography to mysteries but no recourses. I wonder if they had a lack of resource section because they had the computers for research. I am going to say the computers were the resource section and the only resource again was the online library catalog. I liked the fact the library was small, not huge and overwhelming easy to navigate and clearly labeled to make it easier to find the materials you came to the library for. Its quiet (of course) and it has sections, sections to use the computer, study, or just lounge and read a book. There was nothing to not like, it was a library, it had mostly everything you needed and it was a quiet oasis, even a place to bring your children so they can sit in the children’s area and read their own books. With easy and convenient book return boxes at the front of the library and in the parking lot it makes checking out and returning books for time conserving and user friendly.

If you ever wanted to visit this library and check it out, it is a part of the long beach public libraries the “Ruth Bach Branch” located at 4055 bellflower blvd. Long Beach, CA 90808, ph # 562-570-5496 and the website is www.lbpl.org. If you decide to go and haven’t been to the library in a while take your time and check it out , I even signed up for a library card so I know I will definitely take advantage of the resources the library had to offer I even seen some movies I’d might be interested in as well, you never know. J

Thank you for stopping by, and have a great day!
